Six months to one year is the apt time required to prepare for the RBI Grade B exam. In this blog post, we will provide you with an efficient strategy to prepare for both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the RBI Grade B exam simultaneously. This strategy is based on the assumption that you are a complete novice.
Setting a Strong Foundation
With ample time in hand, it is recommended to set a foundation for phase 2 in the beginning itself. This will help in the Phase 1 General Awareness paper as well. It is best to begin with the basics of Economy. Along with a book on Indian Economy, add two newspapers to your reading list – one general one like The Hindu or IndianExpress and a finance & business oriented one like The Economic Times or LiveMint. This will not only help in covering static Economy but will give a general overview of the Indian Economy as a whole. Use websites like Investopedia and Arthapedia for better conceptual clarity. RBI’s website is a must-read in the entire journey of preparation to get ideas on new initiatives and get a better picture of the economy and financial system. Also, several questions may be picked directly from the reports and indices that RBI publishes from time to time. (We’ve discussed sources in a separate post)
Daily Study Routine
Along with Economy, start covering either Quantitative Aptitude or Reasoning. So three things will be getting covered daily in the initial phase – Economy, Quant/Reasoning, and reading two newspapers/RBI website. This will ensure that studying remains interesting and a good foundation gets built to study further.
Interchange Quant and Reasoning as soon as one is complete. However, don’t leave any of these papers midway as it will be difficult to cover the concepts all over again later on.
Finance
The next step is to move on to the basics of Finance. Pick any suitable source and move topic by topic as per the syllabus. The most important part of the entire preparation strategy is to stick to the syllabus.
Management
Now, the static portion of Finance and Economy stands covered. It’s time to move on to Management. The best thing about studying Management is that it is completely static. So if you’re able to cover it beforehand, you’ll just need to skim through your notes in the time period between Phase 1 and Phase 2.
English
With regards to English for Phase 2, it is best to fit it somewhere in the middle. Start by reading model essays/precis whenever you are bored. Post developing a basic understanding of the paper, start practicing. Take a cue from the RBI website. It will help in understanding the expected way of writing.
Before Phase 1
The last two months before RBI Grade B Phase 1 should be entirely dedicated to Phase 1 preparation. The best way to ramp up the preparation is to write several mock tests. Mock tests help in better retention and provide a rough picture of where one stands in the competitive arena.
This post’s motive was to provide an overview of how to formulate a strategy for preparation.
